as a visual artist and ardent learner, anieya cauthen explores the themes of mortality and permanence through various media and materials, such as photography, painting, drawing, filmmaking, and graphic design. she meditates on the idea of photography as an interdisciplinary medium through the exploration of how meaning shifts when mediums shift. she’s also investigating how other mediums operate in the same realm as photography and could be considered photography, as all mediums produce some form of documentation or “proof”. her work is meant to feel small, personal, and intimate–– like journal entries–– and when presented larger is meant to be confrontational.
anieya’s work has formally appeared in a variety of group showcases and most recently, at the krannert art museum in champaign. she has received her bfa in photography with a minor in interdisciplinary african american studies and a mfa in studio art with a photography concentration and museum studies minor from the university of illinois at urbana-champaign.
